Lekoelea Takes SA Striker Crisis Into His Own Hands

Lekoelea Takes SA Striker Crisis Into His Own Hands

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA: 29 January 2005, Steve Lekoelea during the PSL match between SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates at Securicor Loftus in Pretoria, South Africa.

Orlando Pirates legend Steve Lekoelea has revived his love for the game after partnering with Monty Sports International in a project to identify and develop stars of tomorrow.

Lekoelea has finally got involved in the development of players in the country, as he has been enlisted as the Head of Scouting in a talent identification project run by Monty Sports International.

The project, which started it's talent search at Vaalbank Stadium in Mpumalanga last weekend, aims to prepare players for professional football and give hope to communities where there is lack of exposure.

Soccer Laduma caught up with 'Chippa' to find out how the event went and what are their plans.

"We scouted really good players, in the U15, U17 and U19. We want to work with quality players. Once our academy is up and running, more good players will come, we're building a structure now. We will be assisting players with opportunities in the PSL and overseas," Lekoelea told Soccer Laduma.

"We're particularly looking at strikers, because in South Africa we're lacking with strikers a lot. If you ask these players what position they are playing, all of them say midfield, defence, strikers are very rare. You get a few strikers and a lot of midfielders and defenders.

"We're looking for quality strikers, because you know in South Africa we don't score. We want strikers with raw talent, we'll polish them, because you know football is in my blood. I love football. There's nothing I can do without football, football is my life, I've played football my whole life," Lekoelea said.

The former Pirates jersey number ten has a son, Omolemo Lekoelea, 17, who is being monitored by one of the big teams known to the Siya crew.

"He [Omolemo] plays left wing and right wing. He plays a similar style to Neymar, or [Relebohile] Mofokeng, it's the same thing. Mofokeng and Neymar are just the same thing, the only difference is the country," Lekoelea added.
