Sandile Mthethwa has opened up about his decision to leave Orlando Pirates after an eight-year stint at the club, revealing that a lack of playing time and his desire to showcase his abilities were key factors in his move to AmaZulu.

The utility player joined Pirates in 2016, but his time at the club was marked by sporadic appearances and a series of loan spells.

In his eight years with the Buccaneers, he made just 20 official appearances, a situation that left the 27-year-old midfielder feeling like he was wasting precious time in his football career.

"I can never be fed up with a team that made me, you understand, but it was all about the decision to say, I have a lot to give, to show to the country," Mthethwa told journalists.

"I still wanna represent my country. I felt like being outside, not playing, was me wasting my time in football. I'm 27 right now, and this is when I'm supposed to play, and this is where I'm supposed to be a regular in a club."

Mthethwa explained that while he valued his time at Pirates and acknowledged the club's role in his development, his lack of regular game time pushed him to seek opportunities elsewhere. He further clarified that his departure from the Buccaneers was amicable, with both parties reaching a mutual agreement rather than a contract termination.

"My previous home didn't give me that opportunity, so we had a discussion and came to a mutual agreement. And not that Pirates terminated the contract. It was a mutual agreement," he added.

With his move to AmaZulu, Mthethwa is determined to make an impact and fulfill his potential. The move offers him a chance to be a regular starter and continue his footballing journey, which he hopes will help him achieve his ambitions, including representing South Africa on the international stage.
