Khanye: How Brave Pirates Proved Me Wrong In CAFCL

Khanye: How Brave Pirates Proved Me Wrong In CAFCL

Wessam Abou Ali of Al Ahly during the CAF Champions League 2024/25 match between Al Ahly and Orlando Pirates at Cairo International Stadium in Cairo, Egypt on 18 January 2025

Junior Khanye, the renowned analyst and former Kaizer Chiefs star, has admitted to getting his prediction wrong about Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League.

When Pirates started their campaign in the prestigious continental competition, Khanye predicted that Jose Riveiro's side wouldn't make it out of the group stages and would fail to qualify for the next round.

The Buccaneers have since qualified for the quarter-finals, having finished their group with an impressive win over reigning champions Al Ahly at the Cairo International Stadium on the weekend.

"People should understand one thing that a prediction is just what it is, a prediction. Everyone can make their own prediction about the game of football, and it is such things that make the sport exciting and there is nothing wrong with that. The fact that from time to time I make predictions about games it doesn't mean that things will always go my way when that game is finally played. Congratulations to Orlando Pirates for progressing to the next round of the Champions League in such a magnificent way like they did. Well done to the team for playing with some exciting young players in such a big and important competition and it takes courage from the coach to go that way in big games like that. In both sides of the field, Pirates have been attacking with 20-year-old players and surely that can't be easy and well done to both Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota for delivering for the club when it mattered the most," said Khanye, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"This Pirates team has improved a lot compared to the Pirates team I saw back then (when I made the prediction). I think Pirates are the best attacking team in South Africa at the moment. Their front four, if (Tshegofatso) Mabasa is playing along with Tito (Patrick Maswanganyi), Rele and Nkota, those guys are on a class of their own. Pirates are just an exciting team to watch with a lot of their players proving time and again how brilliant they are in creating something out of nothing," he said.
