Diamond Thopola Leaves His Future In Orlando Pirates' Hands

Diamond Thopola Leaves His Future In Orlando Pirates' Hands

After seemingly not forming part of their plans this season, Orlando Pirates sent Diamond Thopola out on loan to Chippa United, where he has excelled. Now, with the season coming to a close, the defender's future lies in the hands of the Buccaneers.

Thopola has featured a mere 13 times in all competitions for the Soweto giants since signing from the Chilli Boys two years ago.

Stern competition for a right-back berth from the likes of Abel Mabaso, Mthokozisi Dube and young Thabiso Monyan, meant limited game-time for the man from Limpopo.

His lack of regular appearances saw him join Chippa United on loan for the second half on the 2019/20 season, where he has managed to establish himself as one of the go-to men for the Port Elizabeth outfit, as they look to retain their top-flight status.

With two years left on his Bucs contract, the defender is expected back at Pirates at the end of the campaign, although he faces an uncertain future in Josef Zinnbauer's team.

Speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma's edition 1188, the 30-year-old opens up on his situation and his hopes for the future.

"That's for Pirates to make the call. Like I said, I am just an employee and whenever I am called, I just go and do my best. It's something that will be decided by Pirates at the end of this season.

"Obviously, as a player, you want to play more often and play regularly. It's our job actually and we are happy when we are playing. I came to an agreement with the team that if I was not going to get game-time, I would go and get game-time elsewhere. So, it was something that we sat down and spoke about. I must say I was very fortunate that the chairman (Siviwe Mpengesi) gave me a call to come and be part of his team. I am grateful for the opportunity," Thopola said.

The player further revealed that he is willing to fight for his place in the Soweto giants' starting XI should the team decide to retain his services.

"Let me just say if I am called to come back and be part of the team, I am happy to do that, and it will be up to me to show them that I deserve to be there and fight for my position in the team," Thopola added.
