Nedbank Cup Last 32

Result: Tornado 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 27 January 2019

Venue: Sisa Dukashe Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs needed an own goal to get past Tornado FC and secure their spot in the next round of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Ernst Middendorp made only three changes from their last league match against AmaZulu, handing a debut to youngster Happy Mashiane, while Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Siphelele Ntshangase was returned to the side.

Chiefs had the first real opening courtesy of an error from goalkeeper Khanya Mini in the 13th minute after he drppped a cross into the path of Leonardo Castro, whose shot was blocked before Ntshangase could not hit the target on a second attempt to shoot to the gaping net.

Against the run of play, Tornado nearly snatched the lead as Kifuwe Siyoko rose highest inside the box to guide his header towards the bottom corner but shot-stopper Virgil Vries produced a fine save.

Castro was unlucky not to have found the breakthrough for Middendorp's charges on the half-hour mark with a brilliant header at the near post that hit the crossbar following a corner.

The Soweto giants dominated the stanza from the onset, but they were often let down by their decision-making, most notably Ntshangase who had squandered a number of good chances.

Middendorp made his first change immediately at the start of the second stanza, withdrawing Mphahlele for Bhongolwethu Jayiya, who was given a rare cameo.   Paez, who replaced Ntshangase, had a good chance to break the deadlock for Amakhosi just after the hour-mark but the Venezuelan could not capitalise on Mashiane's cross from the left flank.   The visitors were struggling to create clear chances against a spirited Tornado defence, despite the introduction of Dumisani Zuma late on.   In the end neither side could find the breakthrough in the latter stages of the half. forcing the encounter into extra-time.   Amakhosi finally found the breakthrough a minute later as Abongile Twani deflected Castro's cross into his own net, 0-1.   Chiefs were lucky to get away with not conceding a penalty ten minutes before the end of extra time after Kgotso Moleko appeared to bring down a Tornado player inside the box but the offside flag was raised. However, replays showed the attacker was onside.   Hendrick Ekstein should have killed the game three minutes later for the visitors after finding space in the box but he fluffed his chance as Chiefs held on for the narrow victory.   Here's how they lined up:   Tornado: Mini, Kwanya, Dipha, Twani, Mhlakaza, Motshabaesi, Ntombaythethi, Dambile, Magqabeni, Mbandlwa, Siyoko.

Chiefs: Vries, Moleko, Cardoso, Hadebe, Mphahlele, Mashiane, Katsande, Ntshangase, Ekstein, Parker, Castro.

Subs: Bvuma, Ngezana, Zuma, Jayiya, Paez, Moon, Andrianarimanana.
