Stuart Baxter On Whether Bafana Bafana Needs A Psychologist

Stuart Baxter On Whether Bafana Bafana Needs A Psychologist

Bafana Bafana head coach has explained why he will not be focusing too much on bringing in a sports psychologist for the national team in order to deal with certain conditions in Egypt.

There have been reports in the media as of late about a tourist bus, which was struck by explosion. The bus at the time was also carrying South Africans.

With Bafana set to grace the big stage at the Africa Cup of Nations competition in Egypt next month, Baxter was questioned about whether it will be necessary to address any psychological issues that the players may face with regards to the conditions in North Africa.

"I think the players understand through their club experiences, if they didn't understand before, we went to Libya, to play Libya in Tunisia and we saw how intimidating it can be, so I think the players did very well to cope with that.

"Security on site, I'm sure it will be bumped up now but I played in Northern Ireland when I was with England in the middle of a riot, where they said to us, if it kicks off, run and assemble in the centre circle and we will drop a helicopter and get you out of there.

"That was intimidating but the only way you can deal with that is about focusing completely on football and that's all I will be speaking about to the players.

"The more I speak about the psychology that is going to help you deal with the bomb threats, I don't think I am going to help the players.

"When we get there I'll only focus on enjoying this event and making the country better," Baxter said.
