Fadlu Davids' Maritzburg United Could Make History This Weekend

Fadlu Davids may be in his first year as an official head coach, but he's not wasting time making an impression and now finds himself one game away from Maritzburg United's first final.

The former Team of Choice player has his side on a seven-game unbeaten run that stretches back to last season and has seen them concede just one goal in four games in 2017/18 so far.

After knocking Mamelodi Sundowns out in the first round of the MTN8, Maritzburg fought back to grab an important away goal against SuperSport United, putting them in a strong position going into tomorrow's second leg.

Davids, who knows the threat that Matsatsantsa pose, is refusing to count his chickens despite – possibly – being in the driver's seat.

He told the Siya crew, "SuperSport are a fantastic side, and we know that at any point they can hit you on the counter and punish you. We have to be pragmatic. We know 0-0 takes us through, but any goal for them means we need to score."

On the topic of Jeremy Brockie returning for SuperSport after his transfer window debacle, Davids said, "I think he'll play a part, that's for sure. Having a weapon like that on the pitch is a threat at any moment. He can finish from any angle.

"Myeni is also an attacking threat for them, another weapon in their arsenal. It definitely makes us sit up and take notice."

Meanwhile, Davids says that – despite being on the verge of Maritzburg's first ever final – their success so far is about his players, not him. He explained, "It's not about me, it's about the players. They've worked hard for this. They really want to achieve something. For the club and the players, it'd be fantastic. A final would be a credit to the board for the work they've put in."

They have suffered a blow defensively, though, with Brian Onyango suffering an injury while away on international duty with Kenya. New signing, Liam Youlley, is still looking to overcome a knee injury he sustained in the pre-season while Mondli Dlamini has a fibula problem. Both will still be out for a couple of weeks.
