Teams: Maritzburg United v SuperSport United
Date: 08 February 2022
Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium
SuperSport have been struggling in the Nedbank Cup since successfully defending the title in 2017 and that trend continued last year as they were knocked out in the first round by eventually winners Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (now known as Marumo Gallants).
Matsatsantsa have won the tournament on three occasions under current sponsors, including in 2012 and will be eager to revive their tag as cup specialists.
The Tshwane giants had a major departure in the January transfer window after Teboho Mokoena joined crosstown rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and in so far as incoming transfers are concerned, they have brought in Sundowns pair, Bangaly Soumahoro and Sifiso Ngobeni on loan until the end of the season.
Maritzburg, on the other hand, also had a key player leaving the side in the January transfer window after Bongokuhle Hlongwane was signed by Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Minnesota United.
However, the Team of Choice moved swiftly to make a number of new signings, including Tawanda Macheke, Genino Palace, Lucky Baloyi, Steven Pereira and Friday Samu.
Maritzburg reached the round of 16 in the tournament last year before they were knocked out by Orlando Pirates and their best finish was reaching the final in 2018 but lost to Free State Stars.
