Esquivel And Sundowns' Foreign Dilemma

Esquivel And Sundowns' Foreign Dilemma

HAMMARSDALE, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 08: Matías Esquivel of Mamelodi Sundowns during the DStv Premiership match between Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundowns at Mpumalanga Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns are intensifying efforts to streamline their squad size as the new season approaches, and the Siya crew finds out which other players could leave the club.

Following the release of multiple players, including Sipho Mbule, Rivaldo Coetzee, Lebohang Maboe, and others, Sundowns are now addressing more complex cases that require alternative solutions.

Siya sources close to the situation have indicated that the Brazilians are believed to be exploring loan options for Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel, who joined the team for pre-season training.

Sources close to Sundowns discussed the 26-year-old's fate going forward.

"He is believed to have been on the list of the players to be released but due to the financial logistics involved, then it is believed that it will cost the club a lot, and that's why they are working on loaning him out again. They are working on downsizing, and he is believed to be one of the players that was supposed to leave," the source revealed to Soccer Laduma.

Esquivel's contract reportedly runs until June 2027, creating a substantial financial obligation that makes an outright release impractical for the Brazilians.

A second insider stated that a return to his former club in Argentina is emerging as the most likely scenario.

"That's the possibility right now. Yes, they are looking at other options but going back to Talleres Cordoba is a possibility because they already know him. But the club is believed to be looking at different options to loan him out as part of the squad downsizing this season," the second insider revealed.

The Argentine joined the Brazilians in 2023 on a four-year contract and has made just a few appearances for Sundowns. He spent the first part of last season on loan back at Talleres Cordoba before returning to Chloorkop in January this year.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment, but the club had not responded by the time this report was published.
