Stats: Where Chiefs & Pirates Could Finish

Stats: Where Chiefs & Pirates Could Finish

The statistical forecasts of both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates does not provide hope that they can make a title challenge against Mamelodi Sundowns, who have not played a league game in 59 days and are still top of the Premiership table.

By the time Cape Town City play on Sunday, one could say this statistic is relevant for two months. On the other hand, Amakhosi and the Buccaneers, the biggest teams in the country, remain hopeful that they can still challenge for the league title, as the Premiership season is yet to hit the half-way mark.

However, taking into account the statistical forecasts, Chiefs, who average 1.16 points per game, would collect a mere 17 points after 15 matches if their ability to get the results remain the same in their next three matches before reaching the half-way mark.

As for Pirates, they average 1,5 points per game, which means they would be roughly on 23 points after 15 games.

If Sundowns win all their matches up to 15 games, they would be on 45 points, 23 points ahead of the Sea Robbers and 28 points clear of the Glamour Boys.

That paints a bleak picture for the two Soweto giants, as Masandawana were 16 points clear of second-placed Pirates at the end of last season and they started to drop points towards the end of the campaign after they mathematically won the title with seven games to spare.

If the Brazilians amass enough points to realistically guarantee them their seventh straight league title next year, they would be expected to drop points again towards the end, as they would also be involved in the CAF Champions League.

But statistically, where would Chiefs and Pirates end up with their current rate?

At their current average points per game of 1,16 points, Amakhosi would only get 21 points from their remaining 18 matches, which means they would roughly be on 35 points at the end of the season.

The 35 points total, which is nine points less than what they achieved last season, could see the Glamour Boys out of the top eight, as last season the teams that had finished on 35 points were hovering around tenth and eleventh places on the log.

The Buccaneers, meanwhile, with their average of 1,5 points per game would accumulate a further 30 points from their remaining 20 games and barring a strong run like they had in the second round of last season, they would end up with approximately 45 points, which is nine points less than what they ended up with last term and as a result could be out of the top three, as the top three sides reached over 50 points in the last campaign.
