While transfer headlines often focus on new signings, a Soweto giant is quietly working to secure the long-term services of an experienced midfielder who has become increasingly valuable to their system.
A Kaizer Chiefs insider with knowledge of contract negotiations has indicated that one of the players the club has opened talks for a new contract with is former Bafana Bafana midfielder Sibongiseni "Ox" Mthethwa, whose current deal is expected to expire in June 2026.

The Siya sources added that Amakhosi are looking at keeping Mthethwa for another two years, hence the need to open talks now.
"The club has already taken the initiative to keep the midfielder for two more years. The talks are believed to have started before the end of the season. But apparently things are looking good. It will all now depend on what both parties are looking at. But the talks are open," the insider told Soccer Laduma.
A confidant close to the team stated that a new two-year contract would be an improved deal compared to the one he signed when he joined from Stellenbosch FC in September 2023.
"Yes, he didn't start well under coach Nasreddine Nabi. We think he didn't understand him. But now they are happy with him and that's why they are offering him a two-year deal. If all goes well and they agree on new terms it will start from next year until June 2028," the second insider told the Siya crew.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder was signed on the registration deadline in September 2023, and the 30-year-old has featured in many Betway Premiership games in his two seasons at the club.
Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment on the situation but there was no response at the time of publishing this story.
The potential early extension for Mthethwa signals Chiefs' confidence in the midfielder's abilities despite his initial adjustment period under Nabi. With the midfielder now approaching his thirties, this extension would likely take him to the twilight of his prime years. The timing suggests Amakhosi are planning their midfield core well in advance, with Mthethwa potentially joining other key players secured on long-term deals as the club attempts to build sustainable success under their Tunisian coach.
