Match Officials For Chiefs' Simba Clash Revealed

Match Officials For Chiefs' Simba Clash Revealed

Kaizer Chiefs leave for Tanzania tomorrow hoping to complete their demolition job of Simba in the CAF Champions League.

But there's been suggestions what awaits them at the National Stadium in Dar es Salam is questionable officiating after the list of referees in charge of the quarterfinals second leg encounter was confirmed.

Amakhosi won 4-0 in the first leg at FNB Stadium last weekend, meaning Simba would have to outscore them to win on aggregate.

CAF has appointed a Burundian team – referee, his two assistants and fourth official – for Saturday's crucial tie, and the argument here could be due to their close proximity, given that the federation has done the same previously.

For Chiefs' final home game in the group stages against Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, match officials from neighbours Egypt were appointed and Siya sources indicated Amakhosi were disgruntled by that decision at the time.

Two Amakhosi players, goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, striker Samir Nurkovic, were dubiously sent off in that game, so you can imagine how Chiefs will feel now.

Referee Pacifique Ndabihawenimana will be assisted by his compatriots Emery Niyongabo, Pascal Ndimunzigo and Georges Gatogato.

The match commissioner is Mike Letti from Uganda, while there's been a change in the referee assessor following the appointment of Ali Mohamed Ahmed.

It's no secret that coaches have in the past bemoaned the poor officiating on the continent, especially with little to no TV coverage for some time now.

And although video assistant referee (VAR) is expected to be introduced in the semfinals and the finals of the Champions League this year, there's no preventing any dubious calls in the last eight of the competition.
