Motaung: The Next Chapter For Khune

Motaung: The Next Chapter For Khune

Kaizer Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung believes club legend Itumeleng Khune has been determined to seek help from his latest problem and get his career back on track.

Chiefs suspended the veteran shot-stopper last week Thursday after disciplinary issues which led to the South Africa legend being stripped off the club captaincy following an impending disciplinary process into his reported misconduct.

Khune was ordered to undergo rehabilitation away from the club, and the Soweto giants stepped in and ordered to help the 36-year-old stopper who has contributed tremendously to the club for over a decade.

"He has contributed immensely to Kaizer Chiefs, he has been a captain for many years. He has contributed to the national team. It is very important that when someone makes a mistake, you find time to sit down and address those issues," Motaung told Timeslive.

"While there is discipline, you must find a way to help people get forward. We have talked extensively; it is a tough journey. But I see a young man willing to do the work properly and accountability and leadership must be done with integrity," Motaung added.

Motaung's words seem to hint that Khune's disciplinary problem is one that she is confident the legend will get through successfully, that the club still values the impact of his career at Chiefs where his legacy won't be spoiled by a single incident. She also hinted that Khune should be back in action soon after he completes this disciplinary process, and that he can still play a part at Chiefs after he stops playing.

"Khune is part of the family but at the same time we have a process that we need to go through now. We are laying the foundation for the next chapter and he needs to do the work that needs to be done and do it diligently," said Motaung.

"Khune's career has flourished and now he needs to look at the next level of the journey and I am excited to unpack that with him to see where we go. What is important in South African football is how we deal with pathways for our players."

Khune has become a household name at the club after breaking through in 2007 and went on to become one of South Africa's most famous sportsman.

This season, after Chiefs initially preferred Brandon Petersen as their number one, the keeper then made a few appearances in all competitions with his last match being the Soweto derby defeat to Orlando Pirates early last month.
