Since their foray into the finals in 2020, Chiefs have not been able to secure a berth in Africa's premium club competition.
Their rivals Mamelodi Sundowns have been a constant presence in the competition, which has boosted their global acclaim. Chiefs are desperate to return to the competition although it looks unlikely at this stage.
The man who was put in charge temporarily in the form of Johnson remains optimistic about Chiefs' chances, albeit feint.
"It is our intention to fight for every point still available in the remainder of the season," Johnson told the club's official website.
"We still believe we can make it. If you don't believe, you may as well pack it in. As Kaizer Chiefs, we'll never do that," he said.
Chiefs have nine matches left in which they can accumulate a total of 27 points, which would secure them a CAF slot next season.
