Khanye’s Big Johnson/Chiefs Worry For Soweto Derby

Khanye’s Big Johnson/Chiefs Worry For Soweto Derby

Junior Khanye has opened up about his concern for Cavin Johnson as the hours are counting down to this weekend's eagerly awaited Soweto derby.

While Chiefs had a morale booster with their 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows on Tuesday, Pirates played a disappointing 1-1 draw against Cape Town Spurs as also acknowledged by the team's head coach, Jose Riveiro.

Following midweek's results, Pirates and Chiefs are fifth and sixth respectively on the DStv Premiership log standings, which makes for their match to be even more interesting as the two giants of Mzansi's football will look to upset each other at FNB Stadium in front of a huge crowd.

Khanye, who has been impressed with Chiefs' improvement under Johnson, is concerned that a loss against arch-rivals could affect the mentor's chances of getting the Amakhosi job on full-time basis.

"Chiefs are going to this weekend's game as underdogs because they have not been doing well. Their win against Arrows was their first of the new year and therefore people don't expect them to beat Pirates. That's why I said it will be a make-or-break kind of a situation for players, and the same applies for the coach. I like Cavin Johnson as a coach, and I think everyone knows that by now, for his way of doing things in dealing with South African football players and in helping them to reach their full potential. I am wishing for him to do well. It is just that when he got the interim coaching job at Chiefs, it wasn't the right time, and a lot of things were no longer in the way they should have been for the team on the field," said Khanye, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"I am worried that a loss in this game could be the end of the road for the coach on any chance he might have had for getting the job permanently. That's why I believe that he will do everything to win the game," the former Chiefs star added.
