Comitis: Khune Still A Top Pick For Any PSL Team

Comitis: Khune Still A Top Pick For Any PSL Team

Kaizer Chiefs veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

In a recent celebration that marked a significant milestone, Kaizer Chiefs honored veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune for his 25 years of dedication to the club. The event, which took place last Saturday, sparked speculation about Khune's retirement, given his long tenure in football and his status as a former Bafana Bafana number one.

However, Khune was quick to dispel such rumours, asserting that he still has a few more seasons left in him at the top level of South African football. Echoing Khune's sentiments, Cape Town City FC's chairman, John Comitis, has voiced his support for the seasoned goalkeeper's continued presence in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Comitis shared his perspective on Khune's capabilities and his potential contribution to South African football, despite the goalkeeper's advancing age.

"Khune is still good. As a goalkeeper you mature with age and looking at Khune's age right now, that is the right age for a goalkeeper to keep on playing. He can still play for any team in the PSL and still do well. He is still a very good goalkeeper for any club that may need him," Comitis remarked, highlighting the value of experience and maturity that Khune brings to the position.

The conversation naturally turned to whether Cape Town City might consider adding Khune to their roster. Comitis addressed this speculation directly, stating the club's current position and their satisfaction with their goalkeeping lineup.

"We still have Darren Keet. We will persevere with Keet at the moment. We don't need Khune right now. As I have said before, he is a good goalkeeper but for now we are good with what we have and that's Darren Keet for us," Comitis explained, affirming the club's commitment to their current first-choice goalkeeper, another former Bafana Bafana stalwart.

Comitis' comments not only reinforce the belief in Khune's enduring skills and potential impact within the PSL but also shed light on Cape Town City's strategic planning and confidence in their existing squad.

As Khune looks to the future, it's clear that his legacy and influence extend far beyond the confines of Kaizer Chiefs, resonating with football professionals and fans alike.

As the PSL continues to evolve, the conversation around veteran players like Khune underscores the league's competitive nature and the ongoing debate about the balance between experience and youth. Khune's journey, characterized by resilience and a passion for football, serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the profound impact one player can have on a team, a club, and an entire footballing community.
