Zwane Edging Closer To Unwanted Chiefs Record

Zwane Edging Closer To Unwanted Chiefs Record

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane faces the possibility of becoming the first Amakhosi coach to lose more than 10 league matches in a season.

Amakhosi slumped to their 10th defeat of the season on Worker's Day, going down 2-1 to Swallows FC, who are now safe from relegation after that victory over Zwane's inconsistent side.

Since 1996/97, Amakhosi have never lost more than 10 matches in a season, but they face that possibility with two more matches left to play in the campaign. Zwane's men next face SuperSport United away from home, a tough fixture against a side determined to qualify for the CAF Champions League. On the final day of the season, they host Cape Town City at FNB Stadium.

Chiefs have finished a season with 10 defeats on three previous occasions. The last time was in 2020/21, the same season they parted ways with Gavin Hunt. They finished eighth that season, thanks to a victory over TS Galaxy on the final day of the campaign.

In 2008/09, Amakhosi finished third on the standings and lost 10 matches, amassing 50 points. Two seasons before that, in 2006/07, the Soweto giants finished outside the top eight, ending the campaign with 10 defeats.

With two games to go in the season, there is no ruling out that Amakhosi could finish the campaign with more than 10 defeats to their name. That's more than a third of the matches in a season, which would be a big concern for management.

It makes the Nedbank Cup even more important for the club, particularly Zwane, who needs to have management on his side going into the next campaign.
