Kaizer Chiefs is expected to make a big decision with regards to the future of one of the team's stars, as reported by the Siya crew.
Following the extension of his deal in January last year to take it to June 2022, Daniel Akpeyi could be set to be rewarded with another contract extension for his progress between the posts in the last few months.
Since arriving from Chippa United in January 2019 in what was seen as a short-term solution at the time and as cover for Itumeleng Khune who was injured, Akpeyi has been a key figure for the Soweto giants and one of the top performers.
The 35-year-old has managed to keep Khune out even when not injured and has appeared to have made the number one jersey at the club his own.
With the Nigerian international left with a little over six months before the expiry of his deal, Amakhosi are believed to be looking at offering the experienced player another contract extension, as confirmed by sources in the know.
Indications are that the club is set to meet with the player's handlers in due course to discuss the terms of the new deal, as reported in the latest Soccer Laduma.
Meanwhile, former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters has welcomed the news of a potential contract extension for the Super Eagles keeper.
"I think he is probably playing his best football now and obviously there are a lot of reasons for that. Obviously, Kaizer Chiefs, for me, has got one of the best goalkeeper coaches (in Lee Baxter) that we have currently in the country, and he is probably one of the most experienced," Walters told the Siya crew.
"Also, with regards to the maturity that he (Akpeyi) has showed, I think he has warranted it (a new deal) and I think he deserves an extension. Obviously, a lot of people will say he is over the age limit and will soon be over the age of 35 and ask if that should be a concern. I mean, even if I look at myself, you know your physique well and you look after your body well and you know when you can play up to close to 40. I think he is good enough for that," the former Cape Town City shot-stopper added.
