In Touch With Bombay Part 2

In Touch With Bombay Part 2

Howzit Reid? It's great to have you with us again this week. Last week you shared some funny stories from your time at Stellenbosch FC, especially about Coach P, who is quite the character. We can't wait to hear what you have in store for us this week…let's get started.

Thank you, my brother. During my time at Stellenbosch, I obviously spent a lot of time with my former teammate Sage Stephens because we are goalkeepers. We had a good bond, both on and off the field. We always knew how to get the best out of one another. When I had a bad day, he knew exactly how to cheer me up. When he had a bad day, I knew exactly how to cheer him up. So, we had a dress code from the club when it came to training and that attire would obviously be communicated by the club. This one specific day, we as goalkeepers were supposed to wear an orange kit. As we were about to start with the warm-ups, I saw Sage arriving with black shorts and an orange jersey.

Ha, ha, ha. He was not wearing the correct kit…

So, I was like: 'Hey man, did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?' Ha, ha, ha. He was like: 'I did not even know. I thought we were wearing another colour'. So, he was there wearing different colour shorts when we were supposed to be wearing orange jerseys and orange shorts, ha, ha, ha.

That's crazy.

I said to him: 'No my friend, you need to wake up. We are wearing orange shorts'. But there he was wearing black shorts. I kept messing around with him and saying: 'You need to lead by example, we have youngsters here'.

Did the coaches say anything to him when he came with the black shorts?

Coach P (Pernell McKop) just laughed at him, ha, ha, ha. Coach P knew the type of bond that we have, so we were able to have a good laugh about it. I know that he would also have been on my case if I had worn something wrong or if I had done something wrong. We always knew and he would be like: 'A day is going to come where I am going to get you', ha, ha, ha.

Ha, ha, ha. It's definitely a good thing that you guys were able to have such a strong bond and laugh at each other's funny moments…

Yeah, that's the type of relationship we had. There was never a dull moment. No matter how far apart we were, when we came together, you could see that there was a strong bond. We would drive to training together and get coffee. That's how we were.

That's great. Let's move on to the next one…

There was a prank that the guys once played on Athenkosi (Mcaba). When dinner was done, we told him to put his two thumbs on the edge of the table. Then, we put a glass on top of his thumbs and then we filled the glass with water and we all walked away, ha, ha, ha. So, he had no way of lifting his thumbs because the water was going to spill all over him, ha, ha, ha. He realised that he was in trouble because we all just walked away, and he had to stay there with the water that was on top of his thumbs inside a glass.

You guys are brutal. So, how did he get himself out of that situation?

Well, he wasn't there for too long. It was for about a minute. As we were walking away, he was like: 'No gents, you can't do this, you can't do this', ha, ha, ha. Eventually, he pulled his thumbs away. I still don't know how he did it, but the water did not spill when he removed his thumbs.

For real? How is that possible?

I don't know. The water did not spill at all. Not even a drop. To this day, I don't know how it did not spill, ha, ha, ha. That was the one prank I can remember from my time at Stellenbosch.

Ha, ha, ha. That is impressive…

We actually took a video of the whole thing. It would be nice if we could show the readers the video because it was such a funny moment. There were some good times while I was at Stellenbosch.

Thanks for your time over these two editions of Soccer Laduma. We definitely enjoyed having you with us and we hope that you'll have more to share with us in future, so that we can have a good laugh.

Thank you for the opportunity, my brother.
