Kaizer Chiefs are once again struggling on the field with disappointing results and former midfielder Junior Khanye talks to Soccer Laduma about what could be the problem.
Going into the Africa Cup of Nations break, many thought that Amakhosi would have enough time to fix things under interim coach Cavin Johnson for better results in the second half of the campaign.
However, the team has not improved yet, having collected just a single point from a possible nine in their last three matches.
This year, Chiefs have won just one in seven matches in all competitions.
One of the matches they failed to win includes the disappointing exit from the Nedbank Cup against second tier side, Milford FC.
Khanye believes that the Soweto giants need a complete restructuring to get things right.
The Good
"Kaizer Chiefs chairman (Kaizer Motaung) is very intelligent when it comes to football and that's why he has managed to build such a big brand that the cub is. It was not a mistake that he did it and it is his God-given talent. Look at the Chiefs village for example, it is the biggest compared to what all the clubs in the country have. That tells you about the vision that the chairman has always had for the club. That is the club that is always looking professional from their playing kits, setup, no money-related issues affecting the players or any complaints of that sort, and that tells you that running a football business is something that he has always been skilled at. But the club now needs to go back to their culture to correct some of the things," said Khanye.
The Bad
"What is happening at Chiefs is disappointing and I knew that even after appointing Cavin Johnson things were still going to be the same or even get worse. I have been crying for Cavin to be considered because I know that he is one of the best coaches in the country and it's just that he has taken over a team that has been disjointed long ago. Chiefs' problems started after Ted Dumitru left the club, having won some trophies. The coach who replaced Ted didn't believe in skillful players and I'm talking about Ernst Middendorp. When Middendorp joined the club, players like the late Scara Ngobese, Gert Schalkwyk and David Mathebula were let go. The club changed its culture, and their direction was no longer the same. Farouk Khan, who was doing so well in development, was also let go and the club's development was never the same again. Imagine that Chiefs had (Giovanni) Solinas as their coach at some point, and what does he know about the club? What did he achieve at Free State Stars for him to coach Chiefs? It was just a matter of hoping that he would get the team some results but that didn't work," he added.
The Ugly
"Chiefs need to allocate proper budget to restructure their development. I have spoken about a spiritual problem for Chiefs, and I know that it sounds like a joke, but it is there and it's very deep. The chairman needs to consult with people that will tell him what to do to get things right for the team from a spiritual point of view," concluded Khanye.
