The story
Bafana Bafana captain and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams has made history as the first South African to receive a nomination for the Yashin Trophy for the Ballon d'Or awards.
Williams is one of 10 goalkeepers nominated for the prestigious Yashin Trophy, alongside elite keepers such as AC Milan and France's Mike Maignan; Italy and PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma and World Cup winner with Argentina, Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa.
His remarkable performances helped Mamelodi Sundowns secure the inaugural African Football League, using the momentum from that tournament to shine brighter at this year's Africa Cup of Nations, captaining Bafana to a Bronze medal.
For his club in the 2023-24 season, Williams made 46 appearances, where he conceded just 19 goals and kept 30 clean sheets — seeing him walk away with the DStv Premiership Player of the Season and DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
Williams' AFCON heroics saw him being awarded with the COSAFA Men's Goalkeeper of the Year and AFCON Goalkeeper of the Tournament, conceding just three goals at the continental showpiece.
