The story

Kaizer Chiefs midfield hardman, Ox Mthethwa, who initially struggled to get game-time at the beginning of this season, has been given a new lease of life by head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

After impressing Amakhosi's technical staff during the Home of Legends Cup in Gqeberha, Mthethwa has featured in the Soweto giants' last four league encounters against Richards Bay, Royal AM, Polokwane City and TS Galaxy.

With the 30-year-old back into the fold, we've seen his bhinca-influenced style reaching new levels as shown in his most recent Instagram posts.

Ox is well known for his affinity to the Zulu sub culture, and as written by IOL journalist, Nco Dube, the bhinca lifestyle Mthethwa's fully immersed has enjoyed a resurgence over the last few years.

"The origins [of the bhinca lifestyle] are in the migrant labour system of colonial and apartheid South Africa where homesick men gathered in mine hostels and performed traditional music, got dressed in their best traditional clothes etc.

"This extended to the holidays when they travelled back home and they would bring expensive city clothes and play what was then a new genre of 'city' music," wrote Dube in his opinion piece.

The revival of this sub-culture, mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, is spearheaded by the likes of polarising radio host, Ngize Mchunu and musicians such as Sjava and Khuzani Mpungose, with others following suit through social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok.

The movement is also driven by maskandi music, heavily characterised by a distinctive fashion style, that includes golf shirts, formal trousers from pricy brands like Brentwood and Italian brand shoes.

Mthethwa's bhinca aesthetic is shining through more than ever, with his most recent IG posts seeing him add a pantsula element to his outfits.
