The story
Jermaine Seoposenwe has spoken candidly about her decision to retire from Banyana Banyana, revealing the treatment from the South African Football Association (SAFA) as a driving factor.
The 31-year-old wrapped up her international career following Banyana's fourth-place finish at this year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they lost 4-3 on penalties to Ghana after a 1-1 draw in the third-place playoff.
Seoposenwe earned over 100 caps for the national team and was part of the historic squad that lifted the WAFCON trophy against Morocco in 2022.
Reflecting on her journey during an interview on Marawa Sports Worldwide on 947, the veteran forward touched on why she's stepping away from the national team, having made her debut back in 2010.
In reposting a snippet of her interview with Robert Marawa, where she highlights how unhappy she’s been in the national team set-up for some time now, Seoposenwe reemphasised her reasons for retiring from Banyana duty.
"The association, the coaching and the culture is why I’m retiring! If we, as a nation, say we love football as much as we say we do, then we have a responsibility to bring change," wrote the Monterrey star on X.
"I hope that my retirement will start a necessary conversation, one that we have been ignoring for years. But if it doesn't, I have done my part! And I will fight for change in whichever way I can, because the next generation deserves that.
"Just like the people before me forged a path for me to be where I am today, so will I," added Seoposenwe.
