What's the story?

Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena recently opened up about what he appreciated about his former national team coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira.

Mokoena rated the Brazilian as one of the best managers South Africa has ever had and recounted a story of how he stood on his principles to drop a star player from Bafana's 2010 FIFA World Cup squad.

Aaron Mokoena on Parreira

Ex-Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena recently opened up about Carlos Alberto Parreira on the 10Bet "The Bettor Pod" with Lorenz Köhler.

"Mbazo", who played for Jomo Cosmos, Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax Amsterdam, KRC Genk, Blackburn Rovers, Portsmouth and Bidvest Wits, waxed lyrical about Parreira and his management style.

"I think for me, Carlos was one of the best managers. Pitso Mosimane can attest to that, he was one of the best managers that South Africa ever had," said Mokoena confidently.

"That guy would tell you that if you are above 11% body fat, you don't play for his team. He believed that once you were lean, you will be able to play in the World Cup," added Mbazo, who went to explain how the former Selecao head coach snubbed Benni McCarthy from the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad.

"He called myself and Benni in the room to tell him, actually before then, he gave Benni the programs to help him to lose a bit of weight and the last day, he had maybe two days before he had to announce the squad. Then he called me and Benni and told Benni why he's not calling him up.

"He even said that 'you are the best striker in South Africa' but my principles are my principles. I believe that you are [too] overweight to be part of the squad and that's how he told Benni.
