Masandawana received a bye through the preliminary round of the tournament following their impressive victory in the 2016 edition of the competition, but will now face Kampala Capital City Authority – or KCCA as they're better known – for a spot in the group stages.
The new format means that 16 teams, in four sets of four, will take part in the group stages of the CCL this year, rather than just eight teams making it into this stage of the competition.
Sundowns host KCCA on the weekend of 10 March, before travelling to Kampala for the second leg the following weekend.
Meanwhile, Bidvest Wits travel to African giants, Al Ahly, for the first leg before welcoming the Red Devils to Braamfontein a week later.
The first round of games in the group stages are due to begin in May, giving the teams that qualify a break from continental football for a couple of months.
Should Sundowns, Wits, or both, lose their respective games against KCCA and Al Ahly, they will then drop into the playoff round of the CAF Confederation Cup, a tournament in which SuperSport United and Platinum Stars are currently taking part.
Mamelodi Sundowns face a trip to Uganda next month as they get their CAF Champions League defence under way, while Bidvest Wits are off to Egypt.
