Janine van Wyk On The Olympics And The FIFA World Cup

Banyana Banyana captain, Janine van Wyk spoke about the difference between representing South Africa at the Olympics and now at the FIFA World Cup.

The South African Women's national team will look to turn things around against China this week, after suffering a 3-1 loss to Spain in their opening FIFA Women's World Cup group stage encounter in France.

However, it is still a proud moment for Van Wyk, as getting to captain South Africa on the biggest stage will go down in history after participating in their first ever World Cup, this compared to the Olympics.

"I think a lot of people ask me what's the difference, well the Olympics is obviously huge but the World Cup is bigger than anything, it's the biggest stage that you could represent your country in and it's something historic for us, for the country, being the first time to participate in such an event," she said.

"It's an amazing feeling and the feeling that I will cherish forever.

Van Wyk then went on to reveal that qualifying for the World Cup has been her ultimate personal goal.

"I think this was my ultimate one, to represent my country at the world stage, and obviously there are some personal records that I want to still break while I am still playing, being the highest capped player and obviously representing my country for as long as I can. That is something that is on my list right now and I will give my everything for my country for as long as I can," she said.
