FIFA Women's World Cup Report: South Africa v Germany 17 June 2019

FIFA Women's World Cup

Result: South Africa 0-4 Germany

Date: 17 June 2019

Venue: Stade de la Mosson

Banyana Banyana ended their debut FIFA Women's World Cup campaign without a victory after losing 4-0 to Germany in their final Group B encounter on Monday evening.

Desiree Ellis' troops had a slim chance of advancing as one of the best third-place sides, although they needed Spain or China to lose in the other group B encounter.

The South Africans did not get off to the best of starts as Germany broke the deadlock after just 14 minutes as an un-marked Melani Leupolz nodded home from close-range.

Germany managed to double their lead on the 30-minute mark as a handling error from goalkeeper Amanda Dlamini allowed Sara Daebritz to guide home in the box.

It got worse for Banyana five minutes before the break when Alexander Popp rose well to send a fine header past a helpless Dlamini.   Ellis opted for a double change at the start of the second half, with Thembi Kgatlana and Rhoda Malaudzi replacing Amanda Mthandi and Ode Fulutudilu.   However, the Germans picked up from where they left off in the first half as Lina Magull fired home from six-yards out after an in-swinging free-kick ratted the upright.   Banyana managed to carve out a rare opening with 10 minutes to go, but Kgatlana was unable to convert past Almuth Schult in a one-on-one situation.   Germany pushed for more goals in the latter stages, Dlamini produced a couple impressive saves to keep the scoreline down.   In the end, 4-0 was how the encounter ended as Banyana finish bottom of the group while Germany secure top spot.

Here's how they lined up:

Banyana: Dlamini,  Ramalepe, Van Wyk, Matlou, Vilakazi, Biyana, Makhabane, Jane, Mthandi (Kgatlana 46'), Ndimeni, Fulutudilu (Mulaudzi 46').   Subs: Swart (GK), Mpuru (GK), Holweni, Dhlamini, Seoposenwe, Makhubela, Gamede, Mulaudzi, Smeda, Motlhalo Kgatlana, Mbane.   Germany: Schult; Gwinn, Doorsoun, Hegering, Schweers; Huth, Magull, Leupolz, Däbritz; Bühl, Popp.
