No Afcon, No Job For Baxter

No Afcon, No Job For Baxter

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter has again reiterated that if he sees no progress during his tenure as national team coach he will ask SAFA to relieve him of his duties with immediate effect.

During a breakfast with journalists, the Englishman was asked what failing to qualify for this year's Africa Cup of Nations would mean for his tenure – and his answer was that he "will walk away even if they asked me to stay".

Bafana have a knife-to-the-throat Afcon qualifier away to Libya late next month and need at least a point to book their ticket to Egypt for the tournament in June. But Baxter has been under extreme pressure following an incredible start with the win away to Nigeria in the opening game, which was somewhat undone by a shock goalless draw away to lowly Seychelles – three days after beating the same side 6-0 at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

"Of course, of course, if we don't qualify I will put my hat there and say 'listen, if you want me to go I will go'. If I can't do the job here, if I think that we are not moving forward at the pace that we want because of certain things – and I just can't do it – I will also walk," said an honest Baxter.

"Even if they (SAFA) want me to stay. If we win 3-0 and everyone is happy, but I know in my heart of hearts that I can't do it anymore, then why stay? And if we lose, but I see that we are on the right path, I will stay if they want."
