Mark Williams On Bafana Bafana: We Are Not Hungry

Bafana Bafana legend, Mark Williams, has spoken of his disappointment in the South African national team's losses against Cape Verde, saying that our players are not hungry enough for success.

Bafana suffered back-to-back defeats against Cape Verde in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers which have, to a great extent, narrowed the country's chances of qualifying for a spot in the prestigious competition next year.

Speaking to the former Bafana striker, Williams highlighted that one of our many problems in the national team is lack of players plying their trade abroad.

"We are spoilt, because we can stay in our own country, just like England, as soon as England's money is going to go down and players need to go out of their country to go and play football, then England will win another World Cup or another European Cup," Williams told the Siya crew.

"But, because they have so much money in the country, the players don't need to go out, just like we are getting it here."

"We don't know what it is to go and compete in Africa where it's hot. If you look at the team that we had in 1997, eight or nine of our players played overseas. So, we had a squad of players that were hungry, that brought the experience from abroad."

"Look at Belgium, where are most of the players playing? In England, so when they play with the Belgium national team, they bring all their experience into the national team and it is very difficult to beat a team like that."

"It is something that we are lacking, we need to be hungry, so the more players of ours playing overseas and coming back to represent Bafana Bafana, we will bring a lot of experience in the team. It is a fact, you can't go around it," he concluded.
