Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux narrowly missed out on the final AFCON squad due to injury earlier this year. However, the Varnamo star was full of praise for the reaction of head coach Hugo Broos to his injury.

Le Roux had looked like a strong candidate for Broos' final squad.

He had been a key figure for his club Volendam at the time and was included in the AFCON qualifiers leading up to the tournament.

However, injury struck and the 24-year-old was sidelined, meaning he missed out on selection for the final squad.

Despite the disappointment of missing out, Le Roux was full of praise for the manner in which coach Hugo Broos reached out and made sure he felt the support from his national team coach.

"I was confident of making the final squad too had I been injury free, of course, if given the opportunity, I would not let my team or my country down. That's if I was not selected, I could not have complaints as I'm sure the coach would have selected what he thought was the best for the team in that time.

"In Bafana or in South Africa, in midfield we have an abundance of great talent. I'm sure you know that so it's okay – it's football," he told the Siya crew.

"Coach Broos gave me a call when I was in the final stage of my recovery process, which I was very grateful for because for a coach to call you personally and just find out how you doing, how you feeling - that is something that means a lot to me or I mean any player these days in modern football.

"He explained that he needed fit players for AFCON, fit players that have been in action regularly and at that time you know which I was not. I was not playing. I totally understood from his perspective. Hopefully he continues to follow my progress here in Sweden from where I get the opportunity to represent my country again. I'll definitely give it my all each and every day this side," he added.

Le Roux was included in Broos' latest preliminary squad for the AFCON qualifiers taking place this weekend; however, he was omitted from the final 23-man squad.
