‘Not Many Coaches Would Have Selected Appollis’

Hugo Broos has been commended for his courageous approach on rising midfield sensation Oswin Appollis.

Appollis was one of Broos' surprise selections for Bafana's recent Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast and he didn't disappoint with his contribution when was selected for the last match – the 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory over Democratic Republic of the Congo in the third-place play-off.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, former Mamelodi Sundowns general manager Peter Koutroulis who is a big fan of Broos, has lauded the Belgian mentor for his decision on the 22-year-old Polokwane City star.

"Still on the topic of Hugo Broos doing well for South African football, I have been impressed with how he has managed to integrate young players into the Bafana Bafana set-up. That can only be good for football in the country and the coach should be supported. For example, not many coaches would have thought of selecting Appollis for Bafana as short as he is but Broos has done it and it worked. Now everybody can see how good the boy he is, and he even contributed scoring a penalty in the penalty shootout in Bafana's last match," said Koutroulis.

"I was following the comments after the game and almost everybody has been convinced that this coach (Broos) is the right man for the job. Lucas Radebe, (Mark) Fish, Doctor Khumalo and many others are all convinced about the coach. That man is clever, and you can tell with his selection of so many players from Sundowns. How many players from Sundowns that have been in the starting line-up in AFCON? That tells you how clever the coach is," concluded the veteran administrator.
