Haskins: We Should Beg Broos

Haskins: We Should Beg Broos

The future of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has come into the spotlight once again, as former player turned pundit Mark Haskins believes everything must be done to make sure the Belgian stays.

Having steered Bafana to third-place at the Africa Cup of Nations, Broos reportedly drew the attention of various national teams around the globe.

It was his second Afcon tournament, winning his first back in 2017 with Cameroon and now taking Bafana further than they've been in 24 years.

"In essence, it would be great if he stays and continues the work he has been doing. I've long been a fan of his and I'm very happy we have swayed a lot of people in this direction," Haskins told Sports Night Amplified with Andile.

As many doubted the credentials of the team before the tournament, Haskins is delighted that the critics have since eaten humble pie.

No one expected the team to go as far as they did on the back of the difficult group they were pitted in (including Tunisia and Mali) and opposition they had to play in the knockout stages like African giants Morocco.

"Many people are now singing the coach' praises, it was a different story prior. But we should be begging him and make sure we do everything in our power to keep the coach going and let him continue the good work he has been doing," he said.

Haskins added there's been consistent progress with Bafana under Broos from the qualifiers and into the Afcon tournament.

"I think we have seen steady and constant progress, maybe not as quick as we wanted. A lot of circles feel that he hasn't delivered quick enough, I think that's been very unfair.

"There has been consistent progress with this team and that's what I'm really happy about and where they are now, we couldn't ask for anything better," Haskins noted.
