Bafana Selection Criteria Explained

Bafana Selection Criteria Explained

Stuart Baxter has vowed to consider players enjoying a "hot vein of form" ahead of announcing his Bafana Bafana squad to face Libya in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier next month.

The national team selection criteria is naturally a hot topic in the run up to, as well as after the announcement of Baxter's selection, and won't be any different when the coach reveals his inclusions as well as omissions in the coming weeks.

He is expected to pick the core of players he's worked with for the most part during the Afcon qualifiers against Nigeria, Seychelles and Libya – in the shock goalless first leg played in Durban last year.

"If there is a player that has a hot vein of form going into it, I think there's got to be a little bit of space for that as well. So the majority of the squad will be ones that I know, ones that know what we want and going in there with our game plan. That will be the majority," Baxter told journalists.

Given that it has been three months since Bafana, who need just a point away to Libya to qualify for this year's Afcon, were in action there could be players that the coach is contemplating calling up.

"The door should be left ajar in case there is someone that is performing outstandingly because confidence will be important going into this game. If you are bottom of the log with your team and playing miserably, I don't think that's going to help you just because you've got 50 caps," said Baxter.
