Amajita's World Cup Diary

Amajita's World Cup Diary

SAFA acting CEO Russell Paul has told the Siya crew that plans are underway to ensure adequate preparation for Amajita ahead of the youth World Cup in May.

They will begin with coach Thabo Senong travelling overseas to visit players and have discussions with clubs – to monitor and identify new players.

In April, the SA Under-20 side is then expected to have a camp in either Spain or Poland, where the World Cup will be held between May 23 and June 15, a date which means there will not be any club versus country saga because all the leagues around the world will be in recess. Senong will have a bigger pool of players to select from.

"We are looking at various oppositions for friendly matches, but we can only confirm once the contracts have been signed, but they will be the same style as the continents that we are going to face," said Paul.

SA, who qualified for the World Cup after finishing third at this year's Africa Cup of Nations in Niger, have been drawn against Portugal, South Korea and Argentina in Group F of the global showpiece.

During a press conference last week, Senong suggested Ukraine, Uruguay and possibly Saudi Arabia could face his team in friendly matches just a few weeks before the tournament kicks off in May.

"We are looking at two or maybe even three matches in April before the team leave for the tournament and then to try to help them peak at the right time, we will look at a few more games in Poland," added Paul.
