Williams Ready To Become Bafana No.1

Williams Ready To Become Bafana No.1

Ronwen Williams believes he has finally shaken off his Bafana Bafana jitters following his heroics in the national team's Africa Cup of Nations opener against Ivory Coast last week Monday.

Although he did concede – Bafana losing 1-0 to the Ivorians in their first Group D match – and then subsequently being dropped in the follow up match against Namibia four days later, Williams insisted that it was the kind of performance he needed to convince everyone he'd earned the start to begin with.

Williams' debut in a Bafana shirt was one to forget more than five years ago in a 5-0 thrashing by Brazil at FNB Stadium – and whenever he dons the national team jersey that's all most people talk about.

"For me the turning point was last year when we played Paraguay (in a friendly) and I came on for the second half," said Williams, who was voted the best goalkeeper in the Absa Premiership during the 2018/19 season.

"I didn't concede then and I played my part with my contribution to Dino (Ndlovu) and when we played Ghana (practice match) I think that was turning point for the coach to see that I am focused and that I am much more mature now and don't make silly mistakes like before – that's years and years of hard work."

Williams could very well earn his place back in the starting line-up for the final group match against Morocco tomorrow, though coach Stuart Baxter has been unpredictable with his goalkeeper choices.
