Varsity Football Round 4 Match Report: Wits 1-4 UJ

Varsity Football Round 4 Match Report: Wits 1-4 UJ

On an icy Thursday evening in Johannesburg, the University of Johannesburg claimed all three points as they defeated Wits University 4-1 at the Bidvest Stadium.

After last week's impressive performance by Wits at home to CUT, neighbours UJ travelled the short distance to attempt to get back to winning ways after they went down 2-0 at the hands of UWC. The Johannesburg derby did not disappoint as a late fight back from Wits wasn't enough, giving their noisy neighbours the bragging rights this season, as the better side in the city.

The match got off to a very fast-paced start, with the visitors dictating play. The hosts found themselves having to defend in the opening stanza of the match. The deadlock was, however, eventually broken by the men in orange, when Manqoba Luvuno pounced on a loose ball to knock it into the net and give his side the lead.

The visitors then continued to dominate play and it didn't take long for them to double their lead, when a corner from the left met the head of Kenneth Langa, who nodded past Kamohelo Moorosi in goal. The home side attempted to claw their way back before half-time but it wasn't to be, instead, another cross from the left for UJ saw them score a third and extend their lead to 3-0 going into the break thanks to a diving header by Pogiso Mabote.

The second half of the fixture saw a more determined Wits take to the field, as they pushed forward more often, but the orange wall held firm to keep the score at 3-0. Midway through the half, however, Wits did manage to find the back of the net. A Saluleko Mathonsi free kick was floated into the box and headed in by Phuti Leboho, to try to inspire a comeback for the hosts.

With the score at 3-1 Wits kept pushing and were caught on the attack, when Shaune Mogaila received a pass off a counter attack and raced through to slide it in and seal a comfortable 4-1 win for UJ in the end.
