North-West University midfielder Orebotse Mongae hopes he can produce more spirited performances to help his team lift the Varsity Football trophy this season.
Mongae helped NWU climb the standings to second spot with scoring a goal in their thrilling 3-2 victory over UL in Mafikeng on Monday night.
The tricky left-winger also walked away with the FNB Man of the Match award after his telling contribution helped his side seal the win in front of their home supporters.
"I was so happy after scoring because I worked really hard for that goal. I was praying and wishing for that goal and it came, so I was very pleased. I'm happy for the team too because we have a real chance to lift the trophy if we keep doing what we're doing," he said.
The 22-year-old believes that with hard work, determination, dedication and discipline his team can go all the way to the final this year.
"The team is quite motivated and our coach keeps us inspired because he's always looking to help us improve on the pitch. He encourages us to motivate each other and always be better than our last game," Mongae added.
Mongae is currently a first year Sport Science student at NWU and grew up playing soccer in Mahmamtsho village in Mafikeng. He dreams of becoming a professional footballer for his favourite PSL team Kaizer Chiefs or football giants Manchester United one day.
"First I need to graduate and keep doing well at football. I also want to help and inspire others because I have the privilege of playing in this tournament and it's an opportunity other young soccer players should also have," he said.
