Top 50 World Cup Moments: Baggio's Penalty Miss

We are down to only 20 days until start of the World Cup in Brazil and continue our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 18: Baggio's Penalty Miss.

In 1994 Roberto Baggio, who had the won the European Footballer of the Year the year before, guided Italy to the final of the World Cup in the USA, scoring five goals on route to the world's showpiece game.

In the final Italy met Brazil, but it turned out to be a lacklustre affair and after 90 minutes, then 30 minutes of extra-time, the score remained goalless, and for the first time in history the winners of the World Cup would be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

It was 3-2 to Brazil in the penalty shoot-out when Baggio stepped up to take his spot kick, knowing that he had to score to keep the Azzurri in the game.

Italy's hero up to then stepped up to take his spot kick, but his shot flew over the goal, and Brazil were the World Cup champions!
