The prestigious accolade, which has been handed out since 2003, is given to the best player under the age of 21 in Europe's top five leagues, and is decided by 30 journalists from 20 well-known sport publications, including Marca, L'Equipe and Bild.
Each journalist has five votes, giving their favourite 10 points, second place seven, third place five, fourth place three and fifth place just one point. All points are then added up to calculate the winner, who, for this year's edition, must be born after 1 January 1998.
The award has been dominated by midfield superstars over the years, with eight midfielders being handed the title as opposed to seven forwards and one defender.
