Quinton Fortune: The Day I Faced Benni McCarthy In The UEFA Champions League Was Out Of This World

Manchester United legend Quinton Fortune has described facing fellow South African Benni McCarthy in the UEFA Champions League – in a game in which both the ex-Bafana Bafana players scored – as one of his career highlights.

The former United and South Africa defender took part in the Cadbury #TasteTheAction online experience on Thursday, spilling the beans on his time with the Premier League giants.

Fortune was asked about his career highlight, and named facing former Orlando Pirates forward McCarthy, who played for FC Porto at the time, in the UCL as one of the outstanding moments of his playing days.

"Obviously playing for Manchester United, winning the Premier League," he answered during the Cadbury #TasteTheAction experience.

"I have had so many blessings. I played with my heroes basically, the guys I had on the wall as a kid.

"Playing in the Champions League against Benni. It was an out-of-this-world experience, because we were kids in Cape Town. A few years later we are standing on the same pitch.

"But, for me, winning the Premier League (was my career highlight), there is nothing better than that.

"It's a hard, hard thing to achieve. When you play your part in helping your teammates do it, it's the most amazing experience."

Both South Africans scored in that game, with Fortune giving United a 1-0 lead before a brace by McCarthy turned the game around.

The latter's Porto went on to win the competition in the 2003/04 campaign, making McCarthy the only South African to lift the Champions League trophy to date.

Fortune was not the only English legend to take part in the Cadbury #TasteTheAction event, with Michael Essien, Michael Owen, Ian Wright and Gary Mabbutt also chatting about their illustrious careers.

REMEMBER, there are also some legendary prizes up for grabs as part of the Cadbury FC #TasteTheAction campaign.
