In the monthly OUTsurance feature in Soccer Laduma newspaper where we get the opportunity to get introduced to South Africa's top referees, this past month saw Akhona Makalima giving us insight into what it is like being a female ref.
In this third instalment of the web feature, Makalima touches on the standard of refereeing in South Africa.
"It has improved over the years and I think it will get better as time goes on."
However, we have seen in a number of post-match interviews where head coaches have complained about the decisions made on the field. So, what actions are taken when it is found out that the ref was indeed in the wrong?
"Refs get fined. Some even get suspended.
"You would find that refs get sent back to the ABC Motsepe League to rectify their mistakes before they can make a return to the PSL again. I think that it's fair. If I make a mistake that costs a team, I should be held accountable for it."
Let's get the conversation started. Do you think that the standard of refereeing has improved in South Africa? Let us know in the comments section below.
