The Dutch legend claimed that the German midfielder was interested in joining the Catalans and expressed his confusion about his decision to join their eternal rivals.
"I can't understand it. I know that Kroos had an affinity for Barcelona and could have gone there," he told Catalan Radio station RAC1.
"I don't know what happened, but he definitely liked the club."
Cruyff then praised Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, and concluded the interview by commenting on Los Blancos' current run of form, which has resulted in an on-going 12-match winning streak.
"He (Ancelotti) spent a long time playing at Milan, where he absorbed a lot of influences, and now he's building a great team at Real Madrid," he added.
"Losing those two games in a row at the beginning of the season was the best thing that could have happened to them.
"Everyone realised that they had to dig a little deeper and that's what they've done since."
