Goalkeeper David de Gea made an uncharacteristic error against Portugal in Spain's first 2018 FIFA World Cup clash in Russia last week, and La Furia Roja legend Iker Casillas has now given his take on the Manchester United man's mistake.
Ronaldo Nazario Makes Big Messi/CR7 Claim
The Red Devils shot-stopper has come in for a lot of criticism after Spain's thrilling 3-3 draw with Portugal last week Friday, during which he made an error that gifted Cristiano Ronaldo the second goal of his hat-trick.
Casillas, who represented Spain in goal on 172 occasions, has since showed his support for De Gea, whom he feels is one of the best goalkeepers around.
"I believe in David because he's one of the top four, or three, goalkeepers in the world," he said, according to Sport.
"For one mistake, you can't hang him out to dry.
"I'd like to say that I believe in De Gea. The most important part is what comes after the group stages.
"(Interim Spain manager Fernando) Hierro, just like (former La Furia Roja boss Julen) Lopetegui, completely trusts in him. But you also need to back Pepe (Reina) and Kepa (Arrizabalaga).
"I support David and Spain. What we all want is for Spain to win."
