Robert Lewandowski's second-half strike saw Bayern Munich claim a 1-0 win over Koln at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening.
Bayern carved out a chance on 13 minutes through Thomas Muller, who showed great control before forcing Timo Horn into a superb low save.
It was one-way traffic in the first half, but the Bundesliga champions failed to take advantage of their dominance in the opening 20 minutes.
The visitors carved out their first chance after 27 minutes as Milos Jolic cut inside and unleashed a strike at goal that sailed just over the crossbar.
Bayern continued to dominate as they carved out another chance in the 38th minute but Muller could only strike the side-netting from close range.
Nevertheless, the score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.
15 minutes into the second half, the home side broke the deadlock as Lewandowski latched onto a pass from Muller before side-footing the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.
Bayern went agonisinly close to doubling their lead on 66 minutes when David Alaba's header crashed against the upright.
With 15 minutes remaining, Jupp Heynckes introduced Joshua Kimmich for Franck Ribery.
The home side pushed for more goals in the closing stages of the second half but they were unable to create another opening and had to settle for the one goal on the night.
