South African local coaches are still presented with challenges and a former player has weighed in on the debate.
Clubs have adopted a new culture of using local coaches as caretakers and hire overseas mentors despite having a wealth of experience.
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhosonke Bhengu believes that local coaches need to get the respect they deserve.
"Let coach Mandla Ncikazi and coach Fadlu Davids be in charge. Give them a fair chance to prove themselves. You can't be giving someone a job when you are not believing in them, it doesn't make sense," Bhengu told the Siya crew.
"A team cannot be transformed overnight. Give local coaches (the) same chances you give foreigners. Our coaches are also educated too and they need to be given (the) same respect, they can't keep on being caretaker coaches."
Bhengu says the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns is proof that with the belief and patience, llocal coaches can succeed.
"Same as what Kaizer Chiefs did with bringing back coach Stuart Baxter while there's coaches who have been doing well in the team. Even now they still using most of the players that haven't been performing for the last five to six years and they expect change.
"They lost the CAF Champions League because of unnecessary changes in the final. This trend of calling our local guys caretakers needs to end for our teams to prosper. The same Mamelodi Sundowns that is dominating is respecting local coaches because they can see how knowledgable they are.
"Believing in local coaches wil help even Bafana Bafana because they understand our football culture from grassroots level," added Bhengu.
