African Boss In Hot Water After Loss To Bafana

African Boss In Hot Water After Loss To Bafana

Benin boss Gernot Rohr is under pressure to improve results before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

An African national team boss is in hot water with his football federation following their FIFA World Cup qualifier defeat to Bafana Bafana.

During the last FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June 2024, Benin finished that phase of their qualification campaign joint top of Group C alongside Rwanda and South Africa, after achieving notable victories against Nigeria and Lesotho.

However, after the qualifiers resumed earlier last month, a 2-2 draw against Zimbabwe and a 2-0 defeat to Bafana have seen them move further away from top position.

The Cheetahs are now five points off the automatic qualification spot, and this has not gone down well with Benin Football Federation head Mathurin de Chacus.

The Beninese football administrator and his fellow executives recently met with head coach Gernot Rohr to investigate their drop in form. After the meeting, de Chacus emphasised the need for results to improve, suggesting that changes would be made should they not.

"This is the first defeat (against South Africa) since the name change. This defeat created more problems because our team has made a fresh start. More and more Beninese people like to watch their team. Starting with this defeat, it's something we really need to understand: why? And what needs to be done to correct it?" he said, as per Afrik Foot.

"The coach arrived, we asked a lot of questions, he gave explanations, and we made recommendations to change things. We want victory to honor the Beninese people. Without victory, there is no sporting life."

"We can't go to the African Cup of Nations with the team we had in Ivory Coast recently and expect victories. That's why we had this conversation with the coach."
