French Coach Sébastien Migné Explains Why He Snubbed Anthony Akumu For AFCON

French Coach Sébastien Migné Explains Why He Snubbed Anthony Akumu For AFCON

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Anthony Akumu has been lauded by his former coach for his progress, although the mentor had snubbed him for an important competition.

During his time as the Kenya national team coach, Sébastien Migné had Akumu as one of the players in his team as the Frenchman guided Harambee Stars to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019.

However, when Migné made his final selection of the squad to travel to Egypt for the competition, Akumu was left out, and the coach who is now with Marumo Gallants has explained his decision.

"He (Akumu) is a holding midfielder and when he played for me, he contributed in qualifying the team for the Africa Cup of Nations although he was often a substitute. Unfortunately, I left him at home for the Africa Cup of Nations because I had Victor Wanyama from Tottenham for the same position in my team. At the time, he was in the final of the Champions League and he was the captain of the team (Kenya). So, it was difficult for him (Akumu)," said Migné, speaking to the Siya crew.

"But it is nice to see him here and he was in the final of the Champions League last season with Kaizer Chiefs. But I'm not surprised because he is a highly competitive player and a nice guy. I think if I was still in Kenya, he would be one of the players in my first eleven," the coach added.
