Despite having retired from football, McCarthy still holds record as Bafana's all-time top goal scorer with 32 international goals.

The former Orlando Pirates player scored seven of his international goals for Bafana during the 1998 AFCON in Burkina Faso, netting four against Namibia, helping the side reach the final where they lost 2-0 to Egypt.

McCarthy was also the first player to score Bafana's first goal at a World Cup, in the 1-1 draw against Denmark in France 1998.

For his impressive scoring record, the 2004 Champions League winner is still recognized amongst the top goal scorers in the history of the AFCON.

A report published on the South African Football Association's (SAFA) official website shows that McCarthy is second to Ndaye Mulamba from Democratic Republic of the Congo on AFCON's list of top scorers in a single tournament.

Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o is still AFCON's all-time leading goal scorer with close to 20 strikes, having played in five tournaments (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008).
