UEFA Champions League
Result: Tottenham Hotspur v Borussia Dortmund
Date: 13 February 2019
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur have taken a commanding lead in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie after thrashing Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.
Dortmund were without the services of talisman Marco Reus as Chelsea-bound Christian Pulisic was drafted into the attack.
The hosts looked lively early on and they should have been ahead inside the opening ten minutes, but Lucas Moura sent his close-range volley over the crossbar.
Dortmund took control from then on, but they were unable to find a way past Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris who produced a couple fine saves at the midway point.
Lloris ensured the sides went into the break level pegging after the Frenchman did well to keep out Dan-Axel Zagadou's towering header.
Spurs broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half through Son Heung-Min, who sent a fine volley past Roman Burki from close range.
The game really opened up after the opening goal, but Dortmund were unable to mount any serious openings at goal as Spurs enjoyed a lion's share of the possesion.
In an attempt to secure an equaliser, the away side threw on Marcel Schmelzer for Zagadou after 76 minutes.
However, the North London outfit doubled their lead with seven minutes remaining as Serge Aurier whipped a cross into the box where Jan Vertonghen was on hand to head home.
Fernando Llorente managed to cap off a fine win three minutes later by nodding home a cross from Christian Eriksen as Spurs will take a healthy lead into the second leg.
