UEFA Champions League Report: Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk, 13 March 2018

UEFA Champions League

Full Time: Roma 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk (2-2 on aggregate) *Roma progressed on the away goals rule

Date: 13 March 2018

Venue: Stadio Olimpico

AS Roma progressed into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on the away goals rule as Tuesday's 1-0 victory over 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk at the Stadio Olimpico secured a 2-2 aggregate win.

The game started positively, with Roma creating a chance in the opening minute of the match when Edin Dzeko dribbled his way to the edge of the box, but he saw his powerful effort well-saved by the keeper.

The match took a turn for the dreary after that as both teams struggled to create clear-cut scoring chances.

The next effort on goal only came on the half-hour mark when Shakhtar's Taison let fly from long range, but he saw his stinging effort sail inches over the target.

That was about as exciting as the first half got, with the two teams entering the tunnel locked at 0-0.

Roma opened the scoring seven minutes into the second half when Kevin Strootman played Dzeko through on goal with a defence-splitting pass and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat, 1-0.

In the 67th minute, Dzeko should have doubled Roma's lead on the night when Diego Perotti played the strike into space, but he fired wide from close range with an empty net at his mercy.

Shakhtar's chances of producing a comeback were dealt a huge blow in the 79th minute when they were reduced to 10 men following the sending off of Ivan Ordets after straight red card.

Despite being a man down Shakhtar pushed forward in search of the goal that would send them into the quarterfinals of the competition but they were unable to do so, losing 1-0 on the night and exiting the Champions League on the away goals after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.
